Name:D Orcot, Ph.D.

"Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show." --Charles Dickens (David Copperfield)

Basics
D Orcot is a 27-year-old with a doctorate in biology. His current research interests are in urban ecology, conservation, and steps humans can take to more peacefully co-exist with the planet. In his free time, D likes to think he can play the electric guitar at something besides Guitar Hero and occasionally writes poetry and song lyrics. In addition to his research grants, D's income is supplemented by nature photographs he takes while he's in the field.

D's Chinese ancestry is quite apparent from his appearance, though his eyes are strange-- an intense blue that tends to shift alarmingly between light and dark hues depending on his mood, his clothes, or the alignment of the planets. D does occasionally dye his hair for brown highlights, but the tendency for it to stick out at strange angles appears to be completely natural. He prefers suits when he has to deal with other people in order to partially counteract his particularly feminine beauty, but otherwise D's fashion tastes run to comfortable, interesting, and unstained.

While not militant about it, D is a strict vegetarian and has been known to get violently ill when faced with eating meat. Eggs and dairy products don't trouble him, and the explanation is generally long, technical, and frustrating vague when D is cornered and asked about it. He especially likes ice cream, tea, chocolate, fruit, and hot peppers. (Though not all at once or in that order.)

To answer the question, D's sexual preference is yes, please and he's had a string of friendly assignations even if he's terrible about calling or writing back (though he's been known to drop text messages at three AM and instant message people out of the blue). D is not interested in settling down just yet and will probably not gain such an interest for a very long time-- he's rather young to be marrying or even considering children.

D tends to be quiet, but his natural reserve evaporates into an almost puppy-like strong affection once he gets to know a person. He tends to trust heavily in his instincts and ability to "read" people, and on the rare occasions D actually manages to make an enemy he is an implacable foe. While calmer than his Orcot name suggests, a fierce temper and even fiercer determination to make things better lurk behind the usual bland expression-- while D isn't the type to throw his aid where it clearly isn't wanted, those who are truly in need of the help he can provide will find it unstinting. D has few friends, but those he has are his for life barring some deep betrayal (and even then, he forgives easier than some of his relatives).
Abilities
D does not appear to be anything other than the young scientist that he is, though people with a particular sensitivity or affinity to magic, nature, or deities will know that there's something very strongly other about him, to the point where anybody who is sensitive and in active worship/service to a nature god or Gaia will probably feel an urge to kneel (please don't, it drives D crazy). The extent of his supernatural abilities is fairly murky (canon being rather vague and D not really being in the mood to press his luck) but over the years D has been able to communicate fluently with all species of animals and plants (though plants talk very slowly), empathy with most living things (leading many to swear he can read minds), manipulate electronics to connect to things they really shouldn't be able to, magically heal and encourage growth (including self-regeneration), and has fits and starts of extrasensory perception in the form of dreams and an instinctual sense of what's really going on.

As it is, D has the skillset common for young professionals living on Earth, 200X-- he is comfortable and conversant with computers, can drive even if he prefers not to, can navigate most major cities if he can find a map, and has the basic college liberal arts education that most people pick up on their way to picking up an advanced degree. Since he is a doctor of biology, D is also skilled handling the typical biological laboratory equipment including genetics equipment (he can do basic replication, sequencing, and comparison work with access to proper databases), dissection equipment (it gives him headaches, though), very basic chemistry equipment, and light microscopes. Being an Orcot, D is also skilled with a few forms of hand-to-hand and armed combat and can use both guns and knives to defend himself in addition to fists and feet. While D is frequently in the company of beasts who are quite dangerous in their own right, he has inherited his father's protective nature and prefers to throw himself into the line of fire rather than let any of his self-appointed guardians do it.
History
About his origins, there's very little D actually knows. He knows that he is the child of the Count D who operated a petshop in San Francisco in the early 1980's and Detective Leon Orcot (genetic testing has proven that he does carry the Orcot DNA, heaven help whoever would care). He knows that he is probably younger than his records state, since his human father found him not long after Count D disappeared, huddled in a blanket in the empty storefront of the petshop, suffering from hypothermia and dehydration and appearing for all the world to be a toddler. D knows that, out of the patient kindness that he has come to associate with his father, Leon Orcot dropped his plans to chase down Count D in order to care for the child, eventually settling in New York City to be closer to Chris and the rest of the family.

D Orcot grew up in New York, attended school with the other human children, discovered his abilities mostly through trial and error, graduated with honors, and decided to become a biologist and save the world from the creeping death that Count D had often told Leon about. During a road trip after getting his bachelor's degree from SUNY, D had his first encounter with what he calls Gaia-- the living pulse of the Earth. It was a rather heavy experience, but the encounter left D with new energy and focus and he threw himself into his graduate studies with enthusiasm that eventually landed him a doctoral degree. Like his true kami relatives, D serves a higher power, only he serves the Earth herself rather than a more simple spirit of vengeance. Whether that will have an impact and how his role in the unfolding of the shared future of the Earth's species plays out remains to be seen-- so far, D has managed to avoid contact with his kami relatives over the course of his own work.

D currently lives in New York on the top floor of the Orcot townhome-- he's a little too lazy to try and find his own place since his work takes him all over the world so often. He doesn't see as much of his father as he used to, since Leon has been off-and-on looking around for Count D since the young half-kami left for college. (At this point, however, Leon's initial obsession has cooled to curiosity, a wish to catch up and find closure, and to shaking that moron until his teeth rattle for abandoning his kid like that!)
